Technology and Our Children
Whether we like to admit it or not, children today are addicted to some form of technology—phones, tablets, laptops, or computers. Technology and app companies are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure the population stays glued to digital devices, as these have become the most powerful medium for them to sell and make a profit. This issue is here to stay—and it’s not going away anytime soon.
How Have They Become Addicted
Unfortunately, when supercomputer technology evolved into handheld devices, we all rushed to embrace these fancy new gadgets that could surf the Internet, send and take pictures, and connect with friends and family instantly. This has led us to use these wonderful devices to entertain our children as well. Children have now become highly skilled at using these devices and rely on them as a way to connect with themselves and the world around them.
What Do We Do Now?
I believe we need to educate and guide our children towards using technology effectively, rather than simply telling them they can’t use it or taking it away. If we try to break this dependency by removing their devices completely—even temporarily—it could harm them mentally more than the devices themselves ever would.
